Dreamcast the Movie: Recasting Super Mario Brothers

We can all collectively agree that the first video game adaptation for cinema, the infamous Super Mario Bros., left audiences with much to be desired.  The producers assembled a dream team for its time; the excellent dramatic actor Bob Hoskins (Hook, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Enemy at the Gates), fresh and hot newcomer John Leguizamo (Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet, Ice Age) and the late rebel actor Dennis Hopper (Speed, Apocalypse Now, Easy Rider). However, the story was a far cry from the pixelated plumbers we know, love and most of us grew up with while we shot fireballs in our basements.  The film aimed to bridge the gap between cinema and video games. In doing so, it created a bastardization and what some say is undeniable proof that video games can never become movies.

Super Mario Bros. fire-balled the brick road we ran back and forth on in the classic Nintendo title and replaced it with a city named Dinohattan in an alternative universe. Here dinosaurs were not wiped out, in fact evolved as humans did and brought along all the emotional baggage that instilled.  It tried, really hard in fact. In the end, it still failed. While it retains a space in the private film collection of many, it is there merely for popcorn and camp.  Most die-hards wash their hands clean of the finished product. Others sit back and say, “If they followed the original source material, you’d be asleep in your seat in five minutes.  They did their best to reinvent it and make it entertaining.”  Overall, it was not what audiences expected from their original Nintendo heroes.

What if we could change that?

Now’s your chance to ram a wrecking ball through the wall of cinema!  I’ve selected three actors for each of the characters from the beloved video game franchise below. Between them, which would you choose to be in the new incarnation of the film (don’t forget the director, too!)?

**  While some characters in this poll did not appear in the film itself, they can certainly appear in this one!  Have a go and leave a comment as to why you’d choose your cast!
