As the premiere of Game of Thrones Season 6 looms (April 24th, 2016), I needed a little reminder of where exactly the major characters were at the end of Season 5. It’s been months, after all, since Season 5 wrapped. So, for my benefit and yours, let’s do a little recap by location.
Lord Tyrell is attempting to negotiate with the Iron Bank which puts his specially assigned Kings Guard, Ser Meryn Trant, in the perfect position to receive his “just desserts.” Arya is wandering around the House of Black & White blind, as punishment for delivering the gift of death to Ser Meryn instead of her assigned target.
Jamie & Bronn sail for Kings Landing with Trystane and the corpse of Myrcella, who died under the poisionous kiss of Ellaria Sand, despite Prince Doran’s brother disapproval.
Hizdahr fell to the Sons of the Harpy at the Great Games along with a good bit of the audience. Daenerys is on the long march to Vaes Dothrak while Drogon rests up. Despite his recent bout of greyscale, Jorah & Daario begin the epic search for their Queen, leaving Greyworm, Missandei and Tyrion to “hold down the fort.” Varys arrives in time to join the fun.
Cersei completed her walk of shame and returned home to find a new member of the Kings Guard, thanks to Qyburn. Meanwhile, the Faith Militant offer their hospitality to Queen Margery and Ser Loras. The High Sparrow proves he isn’t afraid of the Queen of Thorns but Little Finger shares something with her. All the while, King Tommen, First of his Name, pouts in his room.
Shereen served as a fiery sacrifice and her mother killed herself out of grief. Still, Stannis marched on Winterfell but he paid with his life for the death of his brother Renly, allowing Brienne to keep her oath. No doubt Podrick follows close behind. Though Ramsay Bolton, newly naturalized, won a great victory against Stannis, his father Roose Bolton with his Frey wife are expecting a baby boy, putting Ramsay’s position as heir in jeopardy. After a failed call for help behind, or rather off the walls of Winterfell, Sansa & the newly rediscovered Theon jump for freedom.
Maester Aemon’s watch has ended, along with that of Pip and Gren. Sam & Gillie have set off to Oldetown with Little Sam, where Sam Tarley hopes to study at the Citadel to become a Maester himself. Ser Davos returned to the Wall to beg assistance of the Night’s Watch when Melisandre returned to deliver the news of Stannis’ impending defeat. The Wildlings who survived the White Walker attack on Hardhome have sought refuge behind the Wall, putting their faith in Tormond and fearing the alternative. The men of the Night’s Watch are none to thrilled with their visitors and to Jon’s surprise, he pays with his life.
Beyond the Wall
The White Walker army is stronger than ever with many new bodies added to the force after Hardhome. Bran, Hodor and Mira are somewhere in the wild with the Raven King and the Children of the Forest.
