We have a candid discussion on the history and future of film adaptations.

Last year, the Nintendo Wii got a new accessory, the uDraw Game Tablet. Now Xbox 360 & PS3 are getting new gear too! This week, Brian Farrell, President & CEO at THQ, announced the expansion of their revolutionary game tablet intended to unleash creativity.

“The uDraw offers amazing innovation and opens new doors of artistic possibility. There’s no console-based artistic tool like it.”

- Brian Farrell, THQ President & CEO

THQ is serious about capitalizing on the expansion and looks to make this move as successful as the uDraw was for Wii consoles, with 1.7 million uDraw units shipped to date for Wii consoles since the November 2010 launch. THQ updated the new hardware with a sleek contemporary design that promises to integrate console controls directly into the tablet.

Courtesy of THQ, Inc.

The new tablet also boasts enhanced features such as direct touch-screen interface including pinch-and-stretch, as well as rotation capabilities. A more sensitive stylus will allow for greater precision and detail. With integrated motion features and high-definition for art creation and gameplay, the uDraw Game Tablet is something to look forward to and you can expect to get a sneak peek at this week’s E3 Expo.

Showing their commitment to the uDraw Game Tablet, the new hardware for Xbox 360 and PS3 will ship with the updated uDraw Studio: Instant Artist. The software was developed to maximize the tablet’s core functionality. uDraw Studio comes packed with tutorials and basic art guides to help users more easily create and share their inspired art online. New users can join the thousands of current users who have already uploaded their creations to www.worldofudraw.com/art-spotlight.

THQ is also working with other developers to add interactive gameplay experiences and add to their growing number of tablet titles. In addition, THQ is already in production on a number of titles for the new HD-capable hardware, as well as new titles for the current Wii tablet, which are expected to be announce within the next six months.

The uDraw Game Tablet for Nintendo Wii consoles is available for purchase now. The uDraw Game Tablet for Xbox 360 and PS3 is expected for release in time for the 2011 holidays.

The internet is a wonderfully useful tool. Along with the mass dependence of businesses on technology to promote a collaborative global economy, and society as a whole to enhance our social interactions, the web surely is world wide. Most businesses have a website, our family members are friending us on Facebook, we are following celebrities on Twitter, checking in on Foursquare and streaming movies on Netflix. Recently, the internet has even been at the forefront of political movements and providing a communication channel to areas wrecked by natural disaster.

However, with all of this interconnectivity making communication quicker and easier, there are a whole new set of dangers. For the most part, those taking advantage of the internet, do not think much about how the internet works or how the data is tranferred from international servers to their web browser. Among the casual browsers however, are some tech savvy hackers who are willing and able to use their skills to make their presence and their opinions known. Taking to the web with a vengence against corporations, politicians and, in some cases, entire governments with whom they take umbrage.

If you are a gamer with a PS3 console you are all too aware that the Playstation Network which allows for online multi-player gaming, access to streaming content and online purchases is still down due to an “external intrusion.” In what was to be a big week for Sony with the release of Portal 2, Mortal Kombat, the inFAMOUS 2 beta and the integration of Steam support, the company is now rebuilding the service. It is being speculated the hacktivist group known as “Anonymous” is responsible for forcing the service offline. While the group has publicly denied this particular attack, QuickJump reported on a recent post by “Anonymous” which threatened action “if Sony dares to screw with gamers again . . .”

The Playstation Network hack is not the first time “Anonymous” has been linked with hacktivist activity. Earlier this year, “Anonymous” breached security and took control of systems at HBGary Federal because the company was helping investigate the group and was set to publicly announce their findings. Amid the WikiLeaks controversy, “Anonymous” took up the plight of Julian Assange, perpetrating denial of service attacks against Amazon, Paypal and MasterCard for cutting off WikiLeaks’ accounts. During the height of the political unreast in Egypt, “Anonymous” also bombarded websites of three Egyptian government officials with denial of service attacks, essentially knocking them offline.

Of course, “Anonymous” is not the only black hat on the internet. We all remember the Stuxnet virus. A highly complex virus specifically designed to infect industrial control systems, thought to be targeting an Iranian nuclear plant. Although, who crafted such a sophisticated worm and its true intent and target are still unknown.

The recent outages on Amazon’s cloud service affected a great number of businesses and popular services such as HootSuite, Reddit and Foursquare, who use the web hosting service provided by the online retailing giant. The Amazon outages have not been attributed to hacktivist activities, however, it is the latest example of how the big picture is affecting us all in a very real way in our everyday lives.

These black hat hackers may believe they are serving the greater good, protecting the rights and liberties of the every man with their “Damn the Man” philosophy. Sure, these attacks are costing corporations in lost revenue and diminishing the reputation of executives and government officials targeted. Denial of Service attacks do bring issues to light, but are they sending the right message? Personally, when I cannot access web services, I am not thinking about the alleged wrong the company or person under attack has done. In an economic slump when so many work so hard for even less, I am annoyed when the services I rely on and, in some instances, pay for are not available. When misdirected vengence over a perceived injustice affects my business, hackers curry little favor with me.

So the next time your web services become the target of hacktivist agendas ask yourself, who is really being attacked?

Playstation Phone: A norwegian site, DroidNYTT, got their hands on a leaked commercial which seems to confirm the Playstation Phone is real and it has a name. The latest leak reveals the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, expected to officially be announced at the Mobile World Congress, taking play February 14-17, 2011. The commercial suggests the phone will run on the Android platform.

Undead Labs teams up with Microsoft Games to bring their open-world zombie survival game to XBLA. Code named “Class 3,” this first look at their big picture asks gamers to put their survival skills to the test in the zombie apocolypse. Incorporating a “choose your own adventure” aspect, the content is influenced by the decisions and actions of the players as they determine where to find shelter, how to obtain resources and how to face off against the zombie hordes. The most interesting part of this game development is that Class 3 is the first part of what will become a bigger game, code-named “Class 4.” The development team is so committed to creating a fully functioning and immersive game, they are trying something new by focusing on the game-play aspects to really nail them down, before moving on to expand the world and the multitude of options that will be available in the completed “Class 4.”

Common Sense Media seeks sanctions against EA: At the heart of the Dead Space 2 marketing campaign is a commercial boasting “Your mom hates Dead Space 2,” showing reactions from a group of mothers being shown graphic footage from the new game. The shock advertising is meant to appeal to rebellious young gamers. Dead Space 2 has been rated for players age 17 and up. The accusation here is not the campaign itself is offensive, rather that the campaign works too well, enticing gamers under 17 to play. The ESRB has already denied the request, reminding Common Sense Media it cannot be proved the commercial targets gamers of a specific age. Further, the ESRB was consulted and approved the commercial prior to its airing.

GET IN THE GAME

**Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is the follow-up game to Ninja Theory’s Heavenly Sword. 150 years in the future, Mankind is struggling to stay alive. The remaining humans are hunted and enslaved. When a slave ship crashes in New York, the only survivors are Trip and Monkey. Trip is a tech-savvy young woman from a tribe that has remained hidden while robots rule the earth. You play as Monkey, a big, burly fighter with acrobatic skill. To increase her chances of survival, Trip enslaves Monkey to ensure he will protect her as they travel across the treacherous landscape to find a way back to Trip’s people, fighting off mechs along the way. The story is well-told and integrates nicely with the game-play.

Enslaved is set in a post-apocalyptic world. Instead of going for the typical dust-bowl landscape we’re used to seeing from so many games, players are immersed in a lush, green environment which reminds me of the History Channel’s Life After People. Steel, concrete and brick crumble under the oppression of nature, as plants scale structures. The destabilized structures also provide a great environment for the platforming aspects of the game, adding that bit of danger when you realize your hand-hold is crumbling under your weight. Quite simply, the game is gorgeous.

Another fantastic aspect of Enslaved is the facial recognition. A lot of effort has been put into the character design and motion capture to add an additional feeling of realism. A prime example is the inclusion of Andy Serkis, of Lord of the Rings fame, who lends himself to Enslaved for the facial and motion capture, as well as the voice of Monkey. In addition, he puts his considerable talents to good use as co-director of the cut scenes.

In terms of the actual game-play, the game is fun. It combines strategic planning and combat, platforming and hack & slash with a dash of shooter game-play. The companion aspect with Trip is done well. While your primary mission is to protect her, Enslaved doesn’t make it feel like a babysitting job. The companion aspect is a welcome interactive experience, providing necessary assistance to get through the game. The fighting is not especially difficult, but the developers have done a great job mixing in different types of game-play to prevent the game from becoming too monotonous.

Sadly, it’s not all good for Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. Somehow, the game has not been able to avoid dreaded hang-ups. There are more than a few instances when you will find yourself stuck in the background, forcing you to move back before you can continue forward. Hanging on a piece of scaffolding when hopping from one piece to the next is a sure way to be removed from the gaming experience. Another issue is physical interaction with Trip. Too many times you will find yourself walking into and around Trip in order to find just the right stance to toss her to the next level.

Game Review – Epic Mickey: Where is Oswald?

2

Category : Game On, Reviews

cross posted at Total Fan Girl

We’re an Xbox 360 family because my husband is a hardcore gamer.  I can’t generally play games with him because he’s so good, that he leaves me in the dust where I inevitably get shot to pieces by the enemy.  Many times.  And then I get angry and controllers fly….it’s a bad scene.  I do really enjoy watching him play though because so many games now have fully developed story lines and characters.  I wanted to see if Shepard would save the world and get the girl in Mass Effect, and I kept hoping beyond hope that Marston would find his family safe at the end of Red Dead Redemption.  If a game is just about hopping from level to level, shooting bad guys and racking up points, it’s just not as interesting to me.  Those games have their place, but they are not as immersive or as impressive as games with fully fleshed out worlds and characters.  Epic Mickey promised to be my kind of game.

Everyone is familiar with Walt Disney and his amusement parks.  We all know Mickey and Goofy, but very few know about Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.  This little rabbit was Mickey’s predecessor way back in the 20′s and he was hugely successful.  But despite Oswald’s popularity, it was Mickey that became Disney’s greatest success when the rights to Oswald were lost in 1928.  Mickey became famous and Oswald, under different ownership, gradually disappeared from the limelight.  It wasn’t until 2006 that Disney finally got those rights back and Oswald came home.  His original shorts were re-released in 2007 and the first new hints of him in Disney merchandising appeared in the form of t-shirts and Christmas ornaments.  This was all pretty exciting for Disney Geeks, but the most exciting development for this Geek was his pending appearance in Epic Mickey.

I could not wait to see Oswald again, newly animated, running around my TV screen with Mickey.  I don’t own a Wii and I was so desperate that I convinced a friend’s kids to give up their Wii so I could play, with the promise that I’d give them the game when I returned the console. So, for the last month my family has been playing Epic Mickey until today, when I returned the Wii and the game, unfinished, and somewhat disappointed.  The game itself was a classic platformer.  Nothing new or exciting and honestly it’s a bit tricky to play with the nun chucks.  The “paintbrush” with either paint or thinner is a neat idea in an animated world, but aiming it is so flaky that you often miss your target.  My biggest disappointment though, despite downright frustrating gameplay, is something else entirely.

The alternate universe of the Cartoon Wasteland is fun.  Disney fans will easily recognize the different rides, like It’s A Small World, turned into something a bit creepy and odd.  I know, the real ride in the real world might be called creepy and odd but you get my point.  The music is ever so slightly different and a bit off key, the boats float in paint thinner, and there are evil brooms right out of Fantasia throwing buckets of the stuff in your direction as you jump Mickey from boat to boat.  This part of the game was well done and appeals to my inner Disney Geek.  Mickey then moves from one land to the next by jumping into old black and white film reels.  This is also very cool as are the little glimpses of Oswald, who Mickey is chasing.  And of course there are cut scenes, which, given that this is Disney, should be amazing, but….

The cut scenes aren’t actually animated.  Nope.  They’re static images that the camera pans across.  And they’re done in a very minimalist style, more like storyboards from a work in progress than a finished product, and you have to read the words that pop up on screen to know what the images are telling you because the images themselves convey so little.  What?  This is Disney.  What the heck happened?  Oh, and you know that cute little rabbit, Oswald?  The guy who was touted as getting his first new appearance in 50 years and who hasn’t been part of the Disney family in even longer….you hardly see him at all.  Other than his appearance in the opening animated sequence, which is fantastic, Oswald is as elusive as a seat on the Monorail after the fireworks.

I didn’t come to this game as a Gamer.  I came to this game as a Disney Geek who couldn’t wait for the opportunity to see a beloved character of old make a triumphant return to the masses.  I couldn’t wait to show my kids the cute, trouble-making rabbit.  Sadly, I’m going to have to wait a bit longer since his role in this game is practically non-existent.  Epic Mickey held such promise as a reintroduction for this long forgotten character, but instead it turns out to be a poorly executed platformer, with dull cut scenes and very little of the spark of brilliance that is the hallmark of the best stories created by Disney.  Epic?  Not even close.
